Our Story

Our dojo was founded in 2004 by a small group of interested students and an instructor committed to Aikido’s teachings of service, sincere self-improvement and joy. Our founder’s vision, that anyone can train and develop their own self-mastery through Aikido, lives on in his students and the dojo community he inspired.

Our Founder

Barry Tuchfeld (1947 – 2017) held the rank of Yondan (4th degree Black Belt) in Aikido and Shidoin and was a Certified Aikido Instructor. He conducted seminars and was a consultant, public speaker and publisher about how principles of Aikido apply to everyday life. Barry Sensei trained for 25+ years in Aikido, including direct training with Saito Shihan in Iwama, Japan and as a longtime student of Hans Goto Shihan, 7th Dan and Dennis Tatoian, 7th Dan. Barry Sensei’s energy and dedication inspired a generation of practitioners in Sarasota to follow the Iwama tradition.

Our Lineage

We belong to the Takemusu Aikido Association, an international organization that supports the growth and development of Aikido students worldwide, provides advanced training opportunities, and certifies our Dan (Black Belt) Examinations and Instructors.

Frequently Asked Questions for Traditional Aikido of Sarasota

What is Aikido and who is it for?

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art centered on self-defense, balance, and harmony — not competition. It emphasizes redirecting an opponent’s energy rather than meeting force with force, making it accessible for all ages and fitness levels. Whether you’re a complete beginner, a senior, or a parent looking for a family activity in Sarasota, Aikido is a welcoming practice.

Is Aikido right for me?

Aikido is perfect for people looking for a beginner-friendly martial art that focuses on balance, awareness, and personal development rather than competition. Because Aikido emphasizes technique and timing over strength or speed, it’s an approachable practice regardless of one’s fitness level. Many people choose Aikido for stress reduction, confidence building, or as a mindful alternative to high-impact workouts. If you’re looking for a practice that supports both physical movement and mental focus, Aikido may be a good fit.

How do I start Aikido classes at Aikido Sarasota?

No experience is needed to begin. Aikido Sarasota offers a beginner package that includes classes, a uniform (gi), and personal one-on-one guidance to get you started with confidence. Simply contact the dojo or request a free introductory lesson to schedule your first visit.

What should I wear to my first Aikido class?

For your first visit, just wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes you can move freely in — athletic wear works well. Once you enroll, a uniform (gi) is included with the beginner package, so there’s no need to purchase one separately.

Is Aikido good for children in Sarasota?

Yes. Aikido Sarasota’s Youth Aikido program is designed specifically for kids, building focus, self-confidence, and physical coordination in a structured, safe, and supportive environment. It’s an excellent alternative to competitive sports for children who thrive in a more mindful, skills-based setting.

Is Aikido hard for beginners?

Aikido is not hard to start, even for complete beginners, and many techniques can be adapted for students with physical limitations. Our classes are structured to introduce movements gradually, beginning with posture, balance, and safe falling techniques. You don’t need prior martial arts experience, athletic ability, or special conditioning to begin Aikido. While learning any new skill takes time, beginners are encouraged to progress at their own pace in a supportive, non-competitive environment.

How much do Aikido classes cost in Sarasota?

Aikido Sarasota offers two monthly membership options: unlimited class access for $120/month, or a limited plan (5 classes/month) for $75/month. Discounts are available for family members, veterans, active military, first responders, and students who volunteer service to the dojo. Contact us to find the right plan for your situation.

Does Aikido Sarasota offer self-defense training?

Yes. In addition to regular classes, Aikido Sarasota offers practical self-defense workshops and specialized sessions for women, working professionals, and youth. These sessions focus on real-world awareness and de-escalation alongside physical technique.

Can I try a class before committing to a membership?

Absolutely. Aikido Sarasota welcomes prospective students for a free introductory visit so you can experience a class firsthand before making any decision. It’s the best way to meet the instructors, see the dojo, and find out if Aikido is the right fit for you.

What are the benefits of Aikido besides self-defense?

In addition to self-defense skills, Aikido offers many physical and mental benefits. Regular practice can improve balance, flexibility, coordination, and posture while increasing body awareness. Many of our students also report reduced stress, improved focus, and greater confidence in daily life. Because Aikido emphasizes calm response and controlled movement, it’s often practiced as a lifelong discipline that supports overall health and well-being.

How do rankings and belts work in Aikido?

Aikido follows a traditional ranking system that reflects steady progress over time. Students begin at beginner (kyu) levels and advance through several ranks before testing for black belt (dan) levels. At Traditional Aikido of Sarasota, progress is non‑competitive and based on consistent practice rather than speed or comparison with others. There are no contracts or extra fees required for kyu rank advancement, and students are encouraged to focus on technical understanding and personal growth rather than chasing rank.

Do you have Jiu-Jitsu Classes at Aikido Sarasota?

Yes! Jiu-Jitsu classes are provided by our partner: Sarasota Jiu Jitsu Academy.
